तेरी निगाह फ़िरोमाया, हाथ है कोताह
तेरा गुनाह क: नख़ील-ए-बुलन्द का है गुनाह
Your vision and your hands are chained, earthbound,
Is it your nature’s fault, or of the thought too high?

गला तो घोंट दिया अहले मदरिसा ने तिरा
कहाँ से आये सदा 'ला-इलाहा-इल्लल्लाह !
The school-men have strangled your nascent soul,
And stifled the voice of passionate faith in you.
*
ख़ुदी में गुम है ख़ुदाई तलाश कर ग़ाफ़िल
यही है तेरे लिए अब सलाह-ए-कार की राह !
Absorb yourself in self-hood, seek the path of God,
This is the only way for you to find freedom.

हदीस-ए-दिल किसी दरवेश-ए-बेगिलीम से पूछ
ख़ुदा करे तुझे तेरे मक़ाम से आगाह !
Ask an unclad dervish what the heart doth say,
May God show you your place in the world of men.
*
बरहना सर है तू अज़्म-ए-बुलन्द पैदा कर
यहाँ फ़क़त सरे शाहीं के वास्ते है कुलाह !
If bare‐headed, have a towering will,
The crown is not for you, but for the eagle alone.
*
न है सितारे की गर्दिश, न बाज़ी-ए-अफ़लाक
ख़ुदी की मौत है तेरा ज़वाल-ए-नेमत-ओ-जाह !
When you lose self hood, you lose power, too;
Blame not the stars and fate for your fall.
*
उठा मैं मदरसा-ओ-ख़ानक़ाह से ग़मनाक
न ज़िन्दगी, न मुहब्बत, न माअरेफ़त, न निगाह !
Monasteries and schools left me sad and dejected,
No life and no love; no vision and no knowledge.
